Noise is a specification, and it has to be written as a number

Almost every buyer who asks for a silent set is really asking for a level at a particular distance: the boundary fence of a hotel, the deck of a vessel, the wall of a clinic, the edge of a residential plot. A set described only as "silent" tells nobody whether it will satisfy that requirement. The honest way to specify it is to state the acceptable level, the distance, and the ambient noise around it, and then match the enclosure to those figures.

These sets are built with sound-attenuated canopies, and the enclosure is selected against the level you need rather than against the description on a brochure.

What decides whether a silent set meets the requirement

1. The level is stated as a number at a distance. A requirement such as 70 dB(A) at 7 m can be checked and matched; the word "silent" cannot.
2. The surrounding noise matters as much as the set. A set at a busy road boundary can be louder in absolute terms and still be inaudible underneath the traffic, while the same machine beside a quiet clinic is not.
3. Where the set is placed changes the answer. A machine on a rooftop radiates differently from one at ground level against a wall, so the installation position is part of the specification.
4. Attenuation is a combination, not a single part. Lining, door sealing and the exhaust arrangement work together, and the exhaust is often the dominant path on a small set.
5. Cooling and quietening pull against each other. A restriction added for noise has to be balanced with the air the radiator needs, which is why both are specified at once.
6. Small sets are not automatically quiet sets. A machine in the 7.5 kVA class running close to a window still needs a properly built canopy, not a thin cover.

1. The required level, the distance and the installation position are confirmed.
2. The canopy build is fixed against the set's cooling requirement and that level.
3. Engine and alternator are received and checked against the order.
4. The set is coupled on its base frame and the circuits are assembled and tested.
5. The machine is run on the test bench and its settings are verified.
6. The lined canopy is fitted, the air path is checked and the finish is completed.
7. The unit is cased with waterproof cloth and shipped with its documentation.

Questions buyers ask about silent sets

How do I specify a sound level that can actually be met?

Give us the acceptable level, the distance to the listening point and the ambient noise there, plus the installation position. Those four items are what the canopy and exhaust arrangement are matched against.

Is the level quoted at 1 m or at 7 m?

Figures for this kind of set are usually quoted at 7 m, which is a more meaningful buyer-side distance than 1 m. When comparing offers, check which distance each supplier used, because the same machine gives very different readings at the two positions.

Can a silent set still be automatic?

Yes. An automatic start panel with an ATS interface is specified with the canopy for unattended sites, and the panel is positioned so it can be read with the doors closed.

Does the enclosure restrict cooling?

The air path is arranged around the radiator and the site ambient so the build does not cost the set its rating. Tell us the maximum ambient temperature at the site and the cooling arrangement will be set against it.
