Comparing two offers for the same Perkins set

Two quotations for a 30 kVA or 100 kVA set can carry the same headline figure and still describe very different machines. One may specify a genuine engine with a brushless alternator of a known frame and a panel that includes protection; the other may leave the alternator make, the panel functions and the enclosure build form unstated. Most Perkins diesel generator listings published online show only the kVA figure, which is why buyers end up comparing prices that were never for the same thing.

Why the specification has to be written down

The alternator make and frame are stated. A machine with a known brushless frame can be compared with another offer; an unstated alternator cannot.
Panel functions are listed. Protection, ATS interface and metering are either in the quotation or they are not, and the difference usually appears in the lower price.
Enclosure build form is confirmed. An open skid and a canopy at the same rating are different structures, and the quotation says which one it refers to.
Engine identity can be checked on arrival. The identification plate carries the engine designation and rating, which is what a service parts order is placed against.
Radiator is matched to the destination climate. Sets for hot inland sites are not specified with a temperate cooling package by default.
Packing is described in the offer. Sets leave in a wooden case with waterproof cloth, which matters when a machine travels as break-bulk cargo.

Build and inspection sequence

The engine and alternator stated in the order are received and checked.
The units are coupled on the base frame and alignment is set.
Cooling, fuel and exhaust circuits are assembled and leak-tested.
The panel is wired and its protection settings are configured.
The set is run on the test bench and voltage, frequency and protection are verified.
Enclosure and paint are completed where the order includes a canopy.
The set is cased with waterproof cloth and shipped with its packing list and documents.

How do I compare two prices for a Perkins 100 kVA generator?

Ask both suppliers for the engine model, the alternator make and frame, the panel functions, the enclosure build form and the radiator specification for your ambient temperature. Offers that list these items can be compared; offers that list only the kVA figure cannot.

Is a 30 kVA set enough for a small workshop?

Send the equipment list with the starting method of the largest motor. Starting current, not the running total, is usually what decides whether a 30 kVA machine is sufficient.

Which alternator will be fitted?

The make and frame are stated in the quotation for the configuration you order, and buyers often specify a brushless frame of a known make on this size of set. Tell us your preference and it will be included in the offer.
