Marine power fails on installation detail, not on the rating

A marine set has to fit a space that was designed before the engine was chosen, take its cooling from seawater rather than a radiator, and survive an environment that corrodes anything exposed. Vessels that lose power at sea rarely do so because the set was too small; they lose it because the exhaust ran too close to a fuel line, the sea-water pump was inaccessible, or the alternator was never matched to the duty the vessel actually runs.

The marine sets on this page are specified around the engine room you have: mounting arrangement, cooling circuit, exhaust route and control position are agreed before the unit is assembled.

Engine platformCummins marine diesel
Usual output window12 kW to 500 kW in the marine programme
Frequency and speed50 Hz at 1500 rpm; 60 Hz at 1800 rpm confirmed per order
CoolingSea-water circuit, arranged to suit the vessel
InstallationFlexible mounting and exhaust arrangement agreed with the engine room layout

Specification sheet for a marine generating set

Item	Configuration
Genset type	Marine diesel generating set on a Cummins marine engine

Output window	12 kW to 500 kW within the marine programme, including the 12 kVA class for smaller vessels
Frequency and rated speed	50 Hz at 1500 rpm; 60 Hz at 1800 rpm on request
Voltage and phase	400/230 V three-phase; voltages to suit the vessel's distribution to order
Power factor	0.8 lagging
Alternator	Brushless, single-bearing; frame selected for the continuous load on board
Cooling	Sea-water cooling circuit with heat exchanger; pipe sizes confirmed with the engine room arrangement
Exhaust	Wet or dry arrangement agreed with the vessel's exhaust route, including silencer scope
Mounting	Flexible mounts and base frame suited to the hull position
Control panel	Panel located for the position from which the vessel is operated; remote panel available on request
Safety features	Engine protection and shut-down arrangement specified with the panel
Dimensions and weight	Confirmed per model, because the engine room hatch and access route usually govern the selection
Packing	Strong wooden case with waterproof cloth
Typical duty	Workboats and tugs, fishing vessels, passenger craft, cargo and utility vessels

Cummins marine diesel generating set with heat exchanger and control panel on a steel base frame — A marine set from this series. The heat exchanger and sea-water pipework sit on the engine, with the alternator and control panel on the same base frame.

What has to be settled before a marine set is ordered

The access route into the engine room. Hatch size and lifting path decide the maximum unit size as often as the electrical load does.
The cooling circuit. Sea-water pipe sizes, strainer position and discharge are agreed with the vessel, since these cannot be improvised on board.
The exhaust route. Wet or dry arrangement, silencer scope and routing clearances are confirmed with the hull layout before assembly.
The continuous load on board. Hotel loads, winches and pumps run for long periods, so the alternator frame is chosen for that regime rather than for a peak figure.
The operating position. The panel is placed where the vessel is actually operated, which is seldom the same place on a tug and on a passenger craft.
Engine protection. Shut-down and alarm settings are specified with the panel so the engine is protected when nobody is watching the gauges.

The manufacturer behind the marine programme

Jiangsu Qingzhiteng Power Equipment Co., Ltd manufactures diesel and gas generator sets in Yangzhou, Jiangsu. Its marine programme covers 12 kW to 500 kW alongside an inland diesel range of 3 kVA to 3000 kVA, and sets with ATS, parallel systems, low-noise builds and remote monitoring are produced in the same works. Units are exported to more than 80 countries on five continents.

Assembly and release of a marine set

Electrical load, engine room dimensions and the access route are agreed.
Engine and alternator are received and checked against the specification.
The set is assembled on its base frame with flexible mounts and aligned.
Sea-water circuit, heat exchanger and exhaust arrangement are fitted and tested.
Control and protection wiring is completed and checked.
The set is run on the test bench and its electrical and protection settings are verified.
The unit is cased with waterproof cloth and shipped with its documentation.

Similar installations

Workboat fleet, Southeast Asia

The engine room was long and low, so the unit was selected on the basis of what could be lowered through the hatch before the electrical load was finalised.

Fishing vessel refit, Africa

A replacement set had to follow the original sea-water pipework. The heat exchanger connections were agreed with the yard so the existing circuit could be reused.

Passenger craft, Middle East

The panel had to be readable from the operating position rather than the engine room, so the control arrangement was set out with the operator before the order.

Marine buyer questions

How large a marine set can be fitted through my hatch?

Send the hatch opening, the engine room dimensions and the lifting arrangement. Because the unit has to be installed as well as run, those measurements often set the limit before the electrical load does.

Can you follow the sea-water circuit already on board?

Yes, provided the pipe sizes, strainer position and discharge are stated. The heat exchanger arrangement is then matched to the existing circuit rather than the other way round.

Is a wet or dry exhaust better for my vessel?

That depends on the hull, the exhaust route and the space available on board, so it is agreed with the yard. Tell us the vessel type and the route you have in mind.

What protection does the set have?

Engine protection and shut-down settings are specified with the panel, which matters when the engine room is unattended. The exact arrangement is confirmed in the order documents.

How are MOQ, lead time, documentation and payment handled?

These depend on the rating, the quantity, the destination and the payment method, and they are stated in the quotation. Send the vessel details and the port and we will quote accordingly.

The Weichai marine range is the alternative engine platform for this duty, while larger shore-based sets and the full product range cover land installations.

Send the vessel details rather than only the kW figure

Tell us the electrical load on board, the engine room dimensions, the hatch and lifting arrangement, the sea-water and exhaust connections, the operating position, the voltage and frequency, the quantity and the destination port. That is what the installation specification is built from.
