Product Detail

Megawatt standby is a civil and civil-works problem before it is a generator problem

When a plant needs a set in the megawatt class, the failures usually happen around the machine rather than inside it. The room is too small for the radiator air path, the floor slab cannot take the dynamic load, the crane on site cannot lift the finished unit, and the exhaust route crosses a neighbouring property. By the time these are discovered the set has already been ordered to a footprint that does not fit.

The MTU series here is specified the other way round. The engine configuration, alternator and cooling arrangement are fixed against the space and the foundation you actually have, and the measurements are confirmed on the drawing before assembly starts.

  • Engine platformMTU diesel, V-configuration
  • Usual output window800 kW to 2400 kW in this series
  • Frequency and speed50 Hz at 1500 rpm; 60 Hz at 1800 rpm confirmed per order
  • Output400/230 V or 440 V three-phase; 0.8 power factor
  • Plant optionsOpen skid for plant rooms; container and canopy enclosures for outdoor sites

Where the value sits on a machine of this size

  1. The drawing arrives before the machine does. Footprint, weight, air path and exhaust position are confirmed so the civil works can be prepared while the set is still in production.
  2. Radiator position, air intake and discharge are matched to the room, which is the usual cause of overheating on large installations.
  3. Duty is confirmed as standby or prime. The engine variant and the maintenance schedule differ between the two, and the machine is quoted for the regime it will actually see.
  4. Redundancy can be planned from the start. Where the facility cannot go dark, synchronising control is specified with the first machine so a second can be added without replacing the panel.
  5. Container and canopy options remove building work. For sites without a plant room, the enclosure carries its own weather protection and access.
  6. Rigging and civil inputs are documented. Lifting points, anchor plan and finished weight are supplied so the site contractor is not working from assumptions.

The manufacturer

Jiangsu Qingzhiteng Power Equipment Co., Ltd builds diesel and gas generator sets in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, with an inland diesel programme from 3 kVA to 3000 kVA and a marine programme from 12 kW to 500 kW. Large-capacity sets at the top of that range share the works with container units, parallel systems and remote-monitoring configurations, and the company exports to more than 80 countries across five continents.

From order to shipment on a large set

  1. Rating, duty and plant constraints are agreed and the machine configuration is set.
  2. Engine and alternator are received and checked against that configuration.
  3. Coupling, base frame and cooling arrangement are assembled and aligned.
  4. Fuel, coolant, exhaust and control circuits are completed and checked.
  5. The set is run on the test bench and governor, voltage and protection settings are verified.
  6. Enclosure, silencer and paint are finished where they form part of the order.
  7. The unit is cased with waterproof cloth and shipped with its drawing, packing list and document set.

Comparable installations

Data and communications facility, Southeast Asia

The load could not tolerate an outage for maintenance, so the plant was planned with synchronising control and more than one machine from the outset rather than a single large unit.

Industrial plant, Africa

Grid supply was intermittent and the set carried production load for long periods. Duty was confirmed as prime power before the engine variant was selected.

Hospital campus, Middle East

The room was fixed by the building works, so the air path, footprint and exhaust route were agreed from the drawing before assembly began.

Questions buyers ask at this scale

What information do you need before quoting a megawatt-class set?

The required output and duty, the room or site dimensions, the available air intake and discharge, the exhaust route, the fuel autonomy you expect, the slab and lifting conditions, the voltage and frequency, and whether other machines will run in parallel.

Can the set be supplied in a container instead of a plant room?

Yes. Container and canopy enclosures are produced for outdoor positions, which removes the need for a dedicated plant room. The enclosure is sized against the machine and the site climate, so give us the ambient conditions and the position on site.

Do you provide the exhaust and fuel system as well?

Silencer, exhaust piping and the fuel arrangement can be included in the supply scope; whether that is the right choice depends on the plant layout. Describe the site and the autonomy you need and the scope will be set out in the quotation.

How is a plant this size tested?

The set is run on the test bench and its governor, voltage and protection settings are verified before dispatch, and the test information accompanies the shipment. The scope of the test and the documentation is confirmed in the order documents.

What are the MOQ, lead time and payment terms?

They depend on the rating, the scope, the destination and the payment method, so they are stated in the quotation. Give us the rating and the port and we will quote against the project.

Where the facility would rather run several smaller machines, compare the Mitsubishi series and the parallel synchronising control system; the full product range lists the other capacities.

Send the room, not only the rating

Tell us the required output and duty, the room or site dimensions, the air path available, the exhaust route, the expected fuel autonomy, the slab and lifting conditions, the voltage and frequency, and whether the plant will run in parallel. Those inputs are what the configuration drawing is produced from.
